Even if Lillian Hellman's moving portrait of her childhood friend "Julia" is now considered to be a lie by many critics, it's still a beautifully written piece of nostalgy and feminism. Fred Zinnemann's literate style, maybe old-fashioned but effective is precisely what the material required. It's a very well made picture, from Alvin Sargent's screenplay to Georges Delerue's evocative music score, and very well acted by Jane Fonda, Jason Robards and above all Vanessa Redgrave as the elusive, courageous title character.
