Résumé
Début du 20e siècle, Mary, une petite fille, vit avec son père, vétérinaire veuf, en Ecosse. L'enfant chérit particulièrement Thomasina, son chat, mais l'animal est bientôt atteint du tétanos et il faut le piquer. Mary ne peut se resigner à le perdre. C'est alors qu'intervient Lori Mac Gregor, mi-guérisseuse, mi-sorcière.
